What the Lenny face is made of

The Lenny face is not an emoji and not an image: it is five ordinary characters and three combining marks, which is why it pastes into anything that takes text and why it looks slightly different from font to font. The eyes are two degree signs (°, U+00B0). The mouth is ʖ, the Latin letter inverted glottal stop from the IPA Extensions block, put there for phonetics and borrowed for its shape. The eyebrows and the smirk are combining marks: U+0361 twice and U+035C once, characters that draw themselves over the two characters on either side. That is why the brows appear to stretch across the eyes rather than sit on one.

Because it is text, nothing about it needs an app or a font. It survives a copy and a paste into Discord, a game chat, an Instagram bio, a document or a terminal. The one place it does not go is an @username field, which every platform limits to plain letters and digits. How to type the Lenny face on a phone, Windows or a Mac

There is no key for it and no Alt code that produces the whole face: the combining marks mean it is eight characters, not one. Every real answer to "how to type the Lenny face" is a shortcut you set up once. The backslash is the catch, because some chat apps treat it as an escape character and eat it, which is why the shrug is worth copying rather than typing.
