Gothic text generator: Fraktur and bold Fraktur

Old English, gothic, blackletter, Fraktur: four names for one family of letterforms, the broken-stroke script of medieval and early-modern European printing. This gothic text generator does not make a font file. It swaps each letter for the matching character in Unicode’s Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, where the standard defines a Fraktur alphabet and a bold Fraktur alphabet for mathematicians. Because the result is ordinary text, it survives copy and paste into any app.

Fraktur Gothic is the regular weight, thin strokes and sharp angles that read as a manuscript. Bold Fraktur is the heavy one, closer to the Old English lettering on newspaper mastheads and jerseys, and it stays legible at small sizes on a phone. Five of the regular capitals (ℭ ℌ ℑ ℜ ℨ, for C, H, I, R and Z) predate the block and live in Letterlike Symbols; they render identically and copy the same way.

A reading trap worth knowing: in Fraktur the capital I (ℑ) and J (𝔍) are nearly the same shape, as are the lowercase l (𝔩) and the capital I. Check the glyph map below before using either in a name people must type back.

This is the letterform, not the language. An old English font generator styles modern words; it does not translate them into Anglo-Saxon. Medieval font generator, viking font generator, gangster old english font: the searches differ, the characters do not.

Old English font generator questions

Does the old english font generator do numbers?

No, and neither does any other Unicode one. The standard defines Fraktur letters but no Fraktur digits, so 0–9 pass through unchanged, as do punctuation and emoji. The glyph map above shows exactly which characters change.

What is the difference between Old English, gothic and Fraktur?

In everyday use they are the same thing: blackletter, the angular broken-stroke script used in European printing from the 1400s. Strictly, Fraktur is one blackletter family and Old English is another (Textura), and gothic is the umbrella word. Unicode encodes one blackletter alphabet and calls it Fraktur; every online generator, whatever it is called, produces that.

Can I use Old English text in my Instagram username?

In your display name, bio and captions, yes. In the @handle, no: Instagram, TikTok, X and Discord all restrict handles to plain letters, numbers, underscores and periods. Paste it into the name field instead.

Is this any good for a tattoo?

As a preview of how a word looks in blackletter, yes. As the artwork, no: a tattoo artist needs a font file or a drawing, not a Unicode string, and the shapes here are whatever font your phone uses to draw them. Use it to decide, then take a real Old English typeface to the artist.

Why do the I and the J look the same?

Because in Fraktur they nearly are. The capital I is ℑ and the capital J is 𝔍, and most fonts draw them with the same descending stroke. If a name has to be typed back by other people, avoid leading with either, or use the bold weight where the difference is slightly clearer.

How do I get Old English font in Word or Google Docs?
