Underline Text Generator: Underline Text to Copy and Paste Anywhere

Underline text with Unicode: single, double, wavy and dotted
Ctrl+U is formatting, and formatting does not travel: paste an underlined sentence from Word into an Instagram bio and the line is gone. An underline text generator puts the line into the text. After every letter it adds a combining mark from the Combining Diacritical Marks block, drawn under the letter that comes before it. U+0332, the combining low line, is the plain underline; U+035F, the double macron below, is drawn to connect with its neighbours and gives the most continuous line in most fonts; U+0333 is a double underline; U+0330, the tilde below, is a wavy underline like a spell-check squiggle; U+0324 puts two dots under each letter. The result is ordinary Unicode text with twice as many characters as you typed.
The chart lists every line the tool can add, including the overline (U+0305) and the two combinations, strikethrough with underline and overline with underline. "Run the line through spaces" carries the line across the gaps between words, which is what most people want for a heading and not for a list. The letters underneath can be plain or one of the site’s bold, italic, small caps or script styles; bold with an underline is the "bold underline text generator" of the searches. The Remove lines button strips every mark again.
Every mark is from the Combining Diacritical Marks block, U+0300–U+036F, cited against the official Unicode chart.

How to underline text in Discord, on iPhone and Android, and in every app
Where an app can underline by itself, its own formatting is better than Unicode: it is searchable, read correctly by screen readers and removable. Discord underlines with two underscores, __like this__. Google Docs, Word, Excel, Notion and most editors use Ctrl+U (⌘+U on a Mac). iPhone Notes, Mail and Pages underline from the formatting bar; Android’s Gmail and Docs do too. The table below says which apps do and which do not. Where a row says none, and that includes WhatsApp, Slack, Reddit and Markdown for underline specifically, and Instagram, X, TikTok, Facebook, iMessage and SMS for any formatting, paste text from this page instead: an iPhone text message cannot underline, but it can show underlined Unicode text.
Two cautions. A screen reader reads each combining mark or skips the word, so underline a word or a heading, not a paragraph. And an underlined hashtag, @mention or link is not a link any more, because the marks break the word. The character counter page gives the exact length of a result, since the marks double the count against a bio limit.

Underline text copy and paste questions
How do I underline text on iPhone?
In Notes, Mail and Pages, select the text and use the formatting bar (the Aa button) or press ⌘+U on a keyboard. In Messages there is no underline; paste underlined text from this page instead, and it shows as typed.
How do you underline text in Discord?
Wrap it in two underscores: __like this__. Discord draws the line itself. For a Discord display name or About Me, which do not take markdown, paste the Unicode version from this page.
Can I underline text in Instagram, X or WhatsApp?
Not with a button: none of the three has underline formatting (WhatsApp has bold, italic and strikethrough only). Copy underlined text from this page and paste it into the bio, post or message; it works in every field except @usernames.
Which underline looks best?
The joined underline (U+035F) is drawn to connect with the marks on either side and gives the most continuous line in most fonts. The plain low line (U+0332) is the one other generators use and is fine in most apps. Try both in the box above; the letters you type are what you see.
Can I make bold underlined text?
Yes: choose Bold Sans (or any other style) under Letters and the line is added on top of the bold letters. Both the bold and the underline are part of the text and paste together.
Why is my underlined text twice as long?
Every letter carries one extra character, the combining mark, so the count doubles; a double underline or a combination adds two per letter. The count is shown under the result and matters against a 150-character Instagram bio. The character counter page has the exact rules per platform.
