Upside down font: where the flipped letters come from

There is no upside down font. An upside down text generator does two things: it reverses the order of the characters, and it swaps each one for a character that happens to look like it rotated 180°. Reversing matters: a sentence turned over on a page reads right to left, so “hello” becomes “ollǝɥ”, and holding the phone upside down puts it back.

The lookalikes are scavenged from all over Unicode, which is why this page cites more blocks than any other. Most lowercase letters are phonetic symbols from IPA Extensions: ɐ is a real vowel (the a in “about”, in some accents), ɥ a turned h used for a French sound, ʎ a turned y. Ɔ, Ǝ and Ɛ for C, E and 3 are letters from Latin Extended-B, made for African languages. Ⅎ (turned F) and ⅁ and ⅄ (turned G and Y) sit in Letterlike Symbols and Number Forms, put there by mathematicians. Then the loners: ∀ for A is the “for all” operator, ∩ for U is set intersection, Λ for V is Greek, ┴ for T is a box-drawing line, ㄣ for 4 is Bopomofo and ᄅ for 2 is a Hangul consonant.

Some characters are their own reflection. H, I, N, O, S, X and Z look the same turned over, and so do l, o, s, x, z, 0 and 8, so they pass through unchanged; the coverage notes below list them as unmapped because the generator does not touch them, not because they are missing. Everything comes out at the same height as ordinary text, which is why an upside down line fits in a Discord message, a bio or a tweet without pushing the layout around.

This is not the Upside Down of Stranger Things, which is a place, nor a mirror image; a mirror flip needs a different set of characters and does not exist as text. It is the flipped text that has been passed around forums since the 2000s, and it works on every phone because the characters are all decades old.

Upside down text copy and paste questions

How do you make upside down text?

Type it in the converter above and copy the result. The generator reverses the order of the characters and replaces each with a Unicode lookalike that reads as that letter turned over. Paste it into any text field; there is nothing to install and it works on iPhone, Android and desktop.

Why do some letters stay the same?

H, I, N, O, S, X, Z, l, o, s, x, z, 0 and 8 look the same after a 180° turn, so there is nothing to swap them for; they are already upside down. The glyph map shows them as unchanged. Every other letter and digit has a lookalike, though a few are approximate: q stands in for b, and ᄅ for 2.

Can I flip text without reversing it?

Not as text. Turning a line over on paper reverses the reading order, so the generator reverses it too, and the result reads correctly when the screen is rotated. A mirror image, where the letters are flipped but the order kept, would need mirrored characters, which Unicode does not have for most of the alphabet.

Does upside down text work on Discord and Instagram?

Yes, in Discord messages, nicknames and About Me, and in Instagram bios, captions and comments, as well as X posts and TikTok bios. The @handle on each of those is restricted to plain letters and digits, so it will not take flipped characters; the list above states it per field.

How do I turn upside down text back the right way up?

Paste it into the converter above: flipping is its own reverse, so running upside down text through the generator again gives you the original line. Or turn your phone over and read it.

Is upside down text readable by screen readers?

No. A screen reader announces the characters it sees, so ɐ is read as “turned a” or skipped, and the reversed order makes the words unrecoverable. Use it for a joke line or a signature, and keep anything someone needs to read in ordinary text.
